Key Facts
Former U.S. Congressman George Santos, 36, was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison by a federal court in New York on April 25, 2025. Santos, a Republican, was convicted of wire fraud, aggravated identity theft, and other charges related to the misuse of political donations. He had pleaded guilty to the charges in August 2024.
Santos, who was elected to Congress in 2022 representing parts of Long Island and Queens, initially gained attention for his claimed Wall Street experience and impressive academic background. However, investigations revealed numerous fabrications in his résumé, including false claims of working at major financial firms and holding a college degree. Additional allegations of fraud and misconduct surfaced shortly after his election, leading to his expulsion from the House of Representatives in December 2024. This marked the first expulsion of a member in over 20 years and only the sixth in U.S. history.
Federal prosecutors accused Santos of misusing campaign funds for personal expenses, including Botox treatments, credit card payments, and subscriptions to adult content platforms. He also illegally claimed unemployment benefits while serving in Congress and submitted false financial disclosures to the Federal Election Commission (FEC). Furthermore, Santos was found to have stolen supporters’ credit card information, charging over $44,000 to fund his campaign without their knowledge.
During his sentencing, Santos expressed remorse, stating, “I cannot rewrite the past, but I can control the path forward.” However, the judge criticized him for his deceitful conduct, remarking that his election was based on lies. Santos is required to pay at least $374,000 in restitution and will begin his prison sentence on July 25, 2025.
The case against Santos began after a 2022 investigative report by The New York Times exposed discrepancies in his background. Subsequent inquiries by federal and state authorities, as well as the House Ethics Committee, uncovered further illegal activities. Santos has stated he does not intend to seek a presidential pardon, though he made conflicting remarks on the matter in a podcast interview.
